In the foothills of Utah’s Wasatch Range, where cottonwoods line the creeks and pines blaze red in the fall, lives Lars—a woodworker who builds furniture with purpose and soul.
Unlike most, Lars doesn’t get all his lumber from big-box suppliers or distant mills. Instead, he works closely with a local arborist, sourcing wood from trees that had to come down—urban cottonwoods, wind-damaged cottonwoods, or overgrown oaks from backyards and old farms.
The arborist calls when there's a promising trunk, and Lars is often there the same day, inspecting the grain while the chainsaws are still warm. These aren’t logging operations—they’re tree removals done for safety or stewardship. Lars gives the fallen trees a second life. He hauls the logs to a small portable sawmill he operates behind his workshop, where he mills each piece himself, guided by the character of the wood.
His workshop smells of fresh-cut pine and drying cottonwood, with stacks of live-edge slabs and carefully stacked boards lining the walls. Every board has a backstory—“This one came from an old pine tree behind a mid century modern home,” he might say, running his hand along a curling grain. His furniture reflects that history: solid, grounded pieces that echo both the natural world and the neighborhoods they came from.
For Lars, woodworking isn’t just craft—it’s reclamation. It’s turning what would have been waste into heirlooms, and honoring the stories rooted in every tree.
